4 Ways Social Media is Transforming the World of Politics

Social Media and World of Politics

It is no secret that the world of politics is changing. You only have to take a peek at the last US election to see that. Politicians are changing the way in which they target their campaigns, and social media is very much at the forefront of this. On this page, we are going to look at four ways in which the world of politics has been completely changed by social media.

People Choose the News that They Consume

In the past, there were a couple of news channels at the most. The only time you were getting access to 24/7 news would be during a major event. The rest of the time, it was a bulletin every now and then. The way in which people consume their news has changed at a rapid rate. Nowadays, people are not going to conventional sources; instead, they are getting little ‘bite size’ snippets of news through social media. This is very obvious to those who are studying for a masters in political science online. These people can see that political campaign managers are putting a lot of focus on sharing messages through social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. You only have to read the news to see that there are some people who are hanging on to every word uttered by politicians through these channels.

Sharing of News

In the past, you would tend to have a conversation about politics in person. While that still happens from time to time, most discussions related to politics are spurred on by news shared via social media. Think about it. How many of your friends have shared political news on Facebook in recent months? We are willing to wager that most of them have! This has resulted in many people becoming swayed by the information that they see on their Facebook. Some of it is not completely ‘true’, but there is nobody there to verify it. You may have seen some politicians denounce this as ‘fake news’!

One thing that somebody who has studied an online masters in political science from a prestigious organization such as George Washington University will be able to tell you is that social media helps to create accountability for a politician. Once they have said something online, it will always be there. Even if they delete their post, you can bet your bottom dollar that somebody will have saved it or had access to it. Since politicians need to be on social media to legitimize their campaign, and they need to be active on it, it is becoming increasingly important that they are careful about what they say.

Campaign Budgets Are Changing

Digital campaign spending rose dramatically throughout the election and it is predicted to rise in the future, often at the expense of other communication methods. This is because digital marketing is, effectively, one of the cheapest campaigns that you can get up and running, but it is also one of the most effective. For a small sum, a politician could have their content go ‘viral’, which means more people will see their message than through any other medium.

Remember; this is just the start of social media in the world of politics. Things are likely to change drastically over the coming years, and you should not be surprised to see many politicians starting to veer towards social media over TV advertising and the like.
